Building Infrastructure

Subgrants

PA CHEP's efforts to build infrastructure within Pennsylvania's prison education system are multifaceted and driven by a commitment to expanding access to higher education for incarcerated individuals across the state. Central to this endeavor is the facilitation of subgrants to educational institutions interested in initiating Prison Education Programs (PEPs). With generous support from the Mellon Foundation, these subgrants serve as catalysts for the establishment of new educational initiatives within correctional facilities, fostering a culture of learning and rehabilitation.

Collaboration with the PA DOC

In addition to providing financial assistance, PA CHEP is actively engaged in formalizing a partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (PA DOC). This collaborative effort involves the establishment of an advisory board, wherein PA CHEP will play a pivotal role in overseeing the development of an application process for institutions seeking to launch PEPs. Moreover, as a guiding body, PA CHEP will offer ongoing guidance and support to nascent programs, ensuring they have the necessary resources and expertise to thrive.

Guidance and Support

By utilizing funds granted from the Mellon Foundation our position with the PA DOC, PA CHEP aims to provide comprehensive support to new and aspiring PEPs, fostering their growth and sustainability. Through this concerted effort, we seek to expand the reach of prison education programs across Pennsylvania, ultimately working towards the overarching goal of ensuring that every incarcerated individual in the state has access to quality higher education.

With a focus on collaboration, support, and advocacy, PA CHEP remains steadfast in its mission to break down barriers to education and empower incarcerated individuals to build brighter futures through learning. As we continue to forge ahead, we remain committed to the vision of a more equitable and inclusive correctional education system in Pennsylvania.

Application Process

As we continue to collaborate with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (PA DOC) to formalize the application process for Prison Education Programs (PEPs), we are actively working towards providing comprehensive information on how institutions can apply to become PEPs and access subgrants from PA CHEP. While this process is still underway, we are committed to ensuring transparency and accessibility in the application process. Once finalized, the website will be updated with detailed guidelines and resources to support interested institutions in navigating the application process seamlessly.

Stay tuned for further updates as we strive to streamline the process and expand opportunities for higher education within correctional facilities across Pennsylvania.
