Mellon Foundation

The Mellon Foundation’s Vital Support

We owe a profound debt of gratitude to the Mellon Foundation for their unwavering support, which has been instrumental in the inception and expansion of PA CHEP. Through their generous grant to Villanova University, our consortium has been empowered to fulfill its mission of expanding access to higher education within Pennsylvania's correctional institutions. This funding has enabled us to not only establish a statewide consortium for collaboration and capacity-building but also to pioneer innovative initiatives such as college preparatory education and the expansion of existing programs like the Villanova Program at SCI Phoenix. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Mellon Foundation for their vision and commitment to transforming lives through education.

Higher Education Initiatives

We champion a diverse array of higher education initiatives tailored to meet the unique needs and aspirations of incarcerated individuals across Pennsylvania. From bachelor's degrees offered by institutions like Penn State and Villanova University to associate's degrees from Eastern University and certificate programs such as Bloomsburg University's Rehabilitative Justice Certificate Program, we work to ensure that no opportunity for educational advancement is left untapped within the prison walls.

Central to our mission is our collaboration with Inside-Out programs, a transformative model that brings together incarcerated individuals and traditional college students in a shared learning environment within correctional facilities. This innovative approach fosters dialogue, empathy, and mutual understanding, transcending the barriers between the inside and outside worlds.

Furthermore, our partnership with the Petey Greene Program exemplifies our dedication to supporting education at every level. By providing high-quality volunteer tutoring programs, Petey Greene not only assists incarcerated individuals in obtaining high school credentials but also prepares them for success in postsecondary education. Their emphasis on human connection and empowerment aligns seamlessly with our holistic approach to education, ensuring that every individual has the support and resources needed to thrive.

At PA CHEP, we recognize that education is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. Whether it's through credit-bearing courses, non-credit initiatives, or pre-collegiate tutoring programs, we stand as advocates for the transformative power of education in all its forms. Together with our partners and supporters, we strive to break down barriers, empower individuals, and build a future where access to education is truly universal.
