In addition to the Steering Committee, PA CHEP has one currently active subcommittee (Policy Committee) and three others which will begin operations soon. If you are interested in joining any of the committees below, please reach out to Alex Maco, Program Coordinator, at alex.maco@villanova.edu.
Policy Committee
Chair: Efraín Marimón
The Policy Committee serves as a vital platform for advocacy within PA CHEP, focusing on initiatives such as the Unlocking State Aid campaign, which aims to eliminate barriers preventing incarcerated individuals in Pennsylvania from accessing state financial aid. Through regular meetings, members collaborate on various projects, engage with stakeholders, and strategize on policy changes. The committee also emphasizes the importance of inclusivity, seeking input from impacted individuals and considering diverse perspectives in decision-making processes.
Constitution and Membership Processes Committee
Chair: Rodger Benefiel
The Constitution and Membership Processes Committee plays a pivotal role in PA CHEP by overseeing the development and maintenance of the organization's constitution while also shaping its membership framework. Tasked with formalizing membership criteria and processes, this committee ensures clarity, fairness, and inclusivity in membership matters. Additionally, it regularly reviews and adjusts membership guidelines to reflect the evolving needs and dynamics of the consortium. By providing strategic guidance on constitutional matters and fostering a transparent and accessible membership structure, the committee contributes to the cohesion and effectiveness of the organization over time.
State Collaboration Committee
Chair: Coralynn Davis
The State Collaboration Committee aims to facilitate collaboration across the state to enhance educational opportunities for incarcerated individuals. This committee focuses on streamlining processes, fostering partnerships, and establishing memoranda of agreement to enable programs to work together effectively. Key objectives include aligning curricula, accepting credits from various institutions, and providing support services such as tutoring and advising. By mapping out existing initiatives and identifying areas for improvement, the committee aims to optimize educational pathways for incarcerated students, ensuring their successful integration into higher education and society upon release.
Professional Development and Training Committee
Chair: Joe Schwartz
The Professional Development and Training Committee is committed to fostering collaboration, connection, and operational facilitation with organizations dedicated to supporting successful reentry and integration for individuals transitioning from incarceration to higher education and the workforce. Our committee works to coordinate efforts, share resources, and build partnerships. By connecting with higher education institutions, correctional facilities, and community partners, the committee aims to strengthen the prison-to-school pipeline and create pathways for transformative change. Together, we work towards promoting equitable access to education, fostering leadership among system-impacted individuals, and advancing the role of education in public safety.
