View this email in your browser New Prison Education Programs at HACC and Penn State We’re excited to share the launch of two new higher education programs in Pennsylvania’s prison system—major steps in expanding academic opportunities: Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) has started an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts at SCI Camp Hill, enrolling 11 students in its first cohort this spring. HACC plans to admit new cohorts every spring, with a goal of 15–20 students moving forward. Penn State University’s Restorative Justice Initiative (RJI) has launched its official Prison Education Program, offering a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation and Human Services at SCI Benner. This is only the second bachelor’s degree program in a Pennsylvania prison. The inaugural cohort, all transfer students with around 60 credits, began classes in January and will complete their degrees part-time over the next few years. These programs mark significant progress in expanding access to higher education, and we congratulate both institutions on their leadership in this transformative work. Job Opportunity: Prison Education Program Coordinator at HACC Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) is hiring a Prison Education Program Coordinator to oversee and support the college’s newly launched educational program at a correctional facility. This role will focus on program operations, curriculum coordination, and collaboration with faculty and correctional partners to ensure smooth delivery and sustainability of the program. The position is expected to grow into a director-level role as the program expands. Learn More and Apply Upcoming Grant Opportunity: Funding for Higher Ed in Prison Programs PA CHEP will soon open applications for subgrants to support higher education initiatives within Pennsylvania’s prison system. These grants, funded through a Mellon Foundation grant to PA CHEP, will range from $5,000 to $30,000, and are intended to help accredited institutions develop or expand programs, obtain program accreditation, and implement innovative educational approaches for incarcerated individuals. Subgrants will focus on program development, curriculum design, staff training, and evaluation, with the goal of improving access to accredited degrees and certifications that aid reentry success. More details, including the application process, will be shared soon. Workshop for Directors of Pennsylvania’s Prison Education Programs This spring, PA CHEP will host a virtual workshop for directors of Pennsylvania’s prison education programs (PEPs). This will be the first in a series designed to bring together leaders in the field to share insights, collaborate on solutions, and address the unique challenges faced by correctional education programs. By creating a supportive and interactive space, the workshop aims to strengthen connections and promote the continued growth and success of prison education in the state. Further details will be shared as the event approaches. Program Coordinator Office Hours Starting Tuesday, February 11: Alex Maco, PA CHEP’s Program Coordinator, will be hosting office hours every Tuesday and Wednesday from 2:00 - 3:00 PM via Zoom. These open sessions are a chance to ask questions, share feedback, or discuss ideas related to PA CHEP’s initiatives.
